As I was on my way to get groceries … stopped when I saw momma duck and her young-un’s.
I think the little guy does look a bit like Papa. And Papa’s got a pretty ginormous grin.
- Papa?

Pseudo Scorpion
Saw this little guy on the table hanging around my laptop and textbook. He’s actually VERY tiny … see the next pic, which is crappy but okay to judge relative size. I had no idea what it was, but son John saw the pic and knew right away.
May 24 pics
May 24th weekend @ the cabin (Gould’s Pond). These were taken over the weekend … I didn’t bother to date them individually.
The ‘Red Crossbill’ pics are particularly interesting. I looked up the species after returning home – found out it’s an endangered species! In a 2006 report, it said the last known nest in Newfoundland was in 1977, and in 2006 there were 500-1500 individual birds on the whole island.

Up at the cabin … :)
Photo of the day May 15, 2010 (several actually) from the cabin. Taken around dusk, down by the pond.
(Click on each pic to get a full-size view of it)
I did a small bit of post-processing on these. The sparkly looking pics are just that old crappy mossy stuff that’s everywhere on the ground in Newfoundland, especially in moist or boggy areas. I noticed the sparkly effect only after taking the pic – then when I got them on the computer, I simply brought UP the highlights, and brought DOWN the shadows. Neat effect. Looks Christmassy. Not inappropriate, since we had snow like 2 days ago or something.

FEMALE Purple Finch
In my backyard. I posted a pic of the male, taken at the cabin, on the blog last weekend.
FEMALE American Goldfinch
Seems like you don’t see these as often. Maybe it’s because the male is so much brighter, so you simply see them more.
Better American Goldfinch
This one’s a little better. He was in the feeder in my backyard. Here he’s in the tree.
American Goldfinch
Spinus tristis
The American Goldfinch is also known as the Eastern Goldfinch and Wild Canary. Looks just like a canary!
A very poor picture, but the best (and onliest) that I got from the kitchen window. I will try to get a better pic and post it.

Red-breasted Nuthatch
Sitta canadensis
At the cabin, Gould’s Pond
The Red-breasted Nuthatch has a variety of pet names in different parts of the country, including “upside-down bird,” “tomtit,” “cardy bird,” and “little quank.”
Purple finch
Carpodacus purpureus
Male Purple Finch at the cabin, Gould’s Pond.
Roger Tory Peterson (bird guru) described it as a sparrow dipped in raspberry juice.
